Parenting Support

Understanding Parenting Support

What is parenting support, and when do you need it?

Parenting is one of the most rewarding roles you’ll ever take on — and one of the most demanding. Parenting support is counselling focused on helping you navigate the everyday and not-so-everyday challenges of raising children, from managing meltdowns and setting boundaries to handling your own stress, guilt, or uncertainty about whether you’re “doing it right.”

You don’t need a crisis to benefit from support. Many parents reach out simply because they feel stretched thin, unsure how to respond to a specific behaviour, or out of sync with a partner or co-parent on how to handle discipline and routines. It becomes a bigger concern when the stress at home starts affecting your relationship with your child, your own mental health, or the overall calm of your household.

At Brock Counselling, we understand that no parent has all the answers, and that asking for support is a sign of strength, not failure. We work with you to build a parenting approach that fits your family, your values, and your child’s individual needs.

Recognizing the Signs

Common signs you could benefit from parenting support

Every family looks different, but these are some of the signals that parents often notice before reaching out.

Emotional & Relational

Practical & Behavioural

Our Approach

How we support your family

Our therapists use evidence-based, family-centred approaches, because effective parenting support looks different for every household.

Understand the Dynamic

We start by getting a clear picture of your family, your child's temperament, your household routines, and what's been tried already, so support fits your real day-to-day, not a generic script.

Build Practical Tools

We help you develop concrete, age-appropriate strategies for discipline, communication, and connection, drawn from approaches proven effective for the specific challenges your family is facing.

Sustain Progress

As new strategies start to work, we help you adjust and maintain them through the next stage or challenge, so support grows with your child rather than ending with a single fix.

Treatment Approaches

Therapeutic Modalities

Our therapists draw on a range of evidence-based modalities, selecting and blending approaches based on what will work best for your family.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Identifying unhelpful thought patterns around parenting — guilt, perfectionism, or catastrophic thinking — that make everyday challenges feel heavier than they need to be.

Parent Management Training

Practical, structured strategies for behaviour management, consistent boundaries, and positive reinforcement, tailored to your child's age and needs.

Solution-Focused Therapy

Identifying realistic, achievable changes that create more calm and cooperation in your household day-to-day.

Psychoeducation & Skills Training

Understanding child development, temperament, and behaviour, and building the specific communication and boundary-setting skills that fit your situation.

Sessions are offered in-person, virtually, or by phone.

Therapy may be a good fit if:

  • You have a problem that is interfering with your daily life;
  • You have unresolved negative feelings that are affecting your work, home tasks, parenting, or relationships;
  • Your family doctor recommended that you speak with a social worker or psychotherapist;
  • You have been diagnosed with a mental health condition;
  • Your coping strategies are harmful to your health and well-being (drinking alcohol in excess, using drugs, disordered eating, isolation, ‘doom scrolling’); OR
  • You are looking for impartial feedback about your life and life choices.

People begin therapy for many different reasons. You do not have to have everything figured out before reaching out for support.

Therapy welcomes all individuals and requires no prior experience.

You do not need to bring or prepare anything for your first appointment – other than a willingness to participate and engage in the therapy process.

Your therapist will guide and support you through the first appointment. At the end of this appointment, your therapist will help you with setting goals and discussing what your hopes are for your therapy journey.

The primary differences between an RSW (Registered Social Worker) and a Psychologist are their education and the services they provide.

RSWs hold a Bachelor of Social Work or a Master of Social Work. This allows them to provide psychotherapy in Ontario.

Psychologists hold of Doctor of Psychology. While they can provide psychotherapy, most psychologists exclusively provide mental health assessments (i.e., Psychoeducational assessments, ADHD assessments, autism assessments).

It is best to speak directly with the professional about what services they provide.

Services are not offered outside of Ontario.

Registered Social Workers and Registered Psychotherapists are governed by separate regulatory bodies.

The Ontario College of Social Workers restricts services to clients located in Ontario.

Absolutely!

In fact, fit is very important as it reflects the compatibility between you and your therapist.

Research consistently supports that the relationship between a client and therapist is the single most predictor in therapy success – as opposed to treatment type used, number of sessions, and diagnosis.

It may be a good fit if:

  • You feel comfortable opening up, especially about the hard or embarrassing stuff;
  • You feel heard, understood, and respected;
  • You feel comfortable with your therapist challenging you in healthy ways;
  • You genuinely want to attend sessions, even when what you’re talking about is difficult.
